Opportunities in E-Waste Management

As the market is receptive to newer trends, there is a lot of potential for new concepts to make immense returns in business. Nowadays, a fresh concept such as e-waste recycling is well accepted in the market as this industry has a lot of potential. Take a quick look below to know more about it…

E-waste, or electronic waste, recycling is the safest way to dispose of electronic items. Electronic waste includes the discarded parts of: televisions, computers, mobile phones, printers, fax machines , home entertainment systems, refrigerators, microwaves, washing machines, security systems, lighting installations, batteries, USPs, cartridges, cabling and housing circuits, motherboards, CDs, floppy disks, pen drives, chipsets.

Electronics recycling has become a growing concern for solid waste programs across Kenya. Volumes of e-waste continue to grow, setting the stage for the growth of that industry. All these electronic and electrical products are made of parts that can be recycled and used again with certain degree of efficiency and durability. With so much to dig into, running a business in e-waste is all the more feasible.

A few key considerations :

  • Specialized skill investment – you may need one or 2 people with electronic engineering background who will know how to salvage certain electric components without damaging them.
  • Site Security – protect your salvages for their worth.
  • Health and safety – observe standard safety practices as some items may have harmful components in them.
  • Legislation – National/County rules on e-waste management should apply in your business model for certified compliance.

A Public & Private sector partnership is needed to empower the creation of  electronics recycling/reuse programs around the Kenya, and thereby stimulate a reliable and predictable source of used electronics, which will lead to more used electronics recycling and reuse market development.
