Mary Ngechu is a woman in manufacturing, a social entrepreneur, passionate about changing lives through providing avenues for earning a decent livelihood.
Her decade long family run manufacturing enterprise — which started as a labels-making printing business inside a modest space within the Kenya Industrial Estates (KIE) premises in Nairobi — has grown into Line Plast Group Limited a packaging company providing solutions serving a wide range of clients including food & beverage, cosmetics, agro vet & pharmaceuticals in East Africa.
A mother of three, Mary is running businesses she has grown from scratch in partnership with her husband Paul Ngechu Wangaruro and she is an ardent advocate and role model of growing the legacy of family businesses for Kenyans.
Mary serves as a mentor in the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) Women in Manufacturing Programme, advocating for greater female participation in the industry to support Kenya's economic growth and industrialization.
Mary promotes decent jobs by challenging gender occupational segregation in manufacturing. Her enterprises provide equal opportunities, with over 40% of women working in production roles, ensuring inclusive and fair employment in a traditionally male-dominated sector.
Mary was honored as the UN in Kenya Person of the Year (Runners Up) in 2017 for her impact on promoting skills in the manufacturing industry. The award was determined through consultations and voting by 25 UN agencies in Kenya.
In 2018, Mary was nominated as an Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year (EOY) East Africa Finalist in the Winning Woman Category, recognizing her leadership, vision, and innovation in building and growing successful businesses.
